A good warm-up does more than just break the ice—it sets the tone for your entire workshop. It can shape group dynamics, build trust, and create a shared atmosphere.
But let’s be honest—warm-ups can also feel weird. We’ve all been in those awkward moments—both as participants and facilitators—when a warm-up just didn’t land. That’s why choosing the right one really matters. It can make or break your session.
So, how do you find the one that fits? Start by asking yourself these 5 key questions:
1. Who is your group, really?
Is this a group that knows each other, or are they meeting for the first time? Are they used to working together, or coming from different backgrounds? Are there power dynamics to consider?
→ A well-matched warm-up helps people feel safe, respected, and connected.
2. What energy is in the room?
Are participants full of energy, or tired after a long day? Did they just come from a stressful situation?
→ Matching the energy of the room helps the group arrive and engage more meaningfully.
3. What languages, cultures, and abilities are present?
Is the group multilingual? Are there different communication or access needs?
→ Choose inclusive exercises—verbal, visual, or movement-based—to make sure everyone can participate.
4. What role do you play as a facilitator?
Are you guiding from the outside, or joining in? Do you want to build a collaborative space or keep some professional distance?
→ How you show up in the warm-up sets the tone for the rest of the session.
5. What is the goal of your warm-up?
Do you want to break the ice, introduce the topic, or simply help people land in the space?
→ A purposeful warm-up creates a natural bridge into your session—not just a standalone activity.
And last but not least…Don’t forget what you personally need as a facilitator. A warm-up can support your own energy and focus too.
